The name of the village Surcea (Szörcse) was first mentioned in 1567; most probably the settlement got its name from a nobleman called Szörcse. The old, wooden church was pulled down, and in 1840 the Calvinist congregation built a new one. There is no data about its medieval church.

The tradition of sleighing (szánozás) still lives in this village. The roots of this tradition have to be looked for in the heathen fertility rituals. On Easter Monday young husbands and bachelors wander all over the village by horses and sleighs, they tell small poems and rhymes, this way paying their respect to the tenants of the houses and asking permission to water the girls and women of the house.
